Term 1

 Ocean Dioramas

As part of our Ocean  Inquiry we created dioramas, showing the effect that pollution is having on our oceans and seas.  We planned our scene first and then collected our bits and pieces before gluing them in.

Finally, we came up with messages that we wanted to share with everyone:

  • Don't leave large nets floating on the water because it kills all kinds of animals.
  •  Don't catch too many fish, it's against the law.
  • Only catch a few fish so we have plenty left.
  • Stop over fishing.
  • Plastic kills.
  • Plastic kills turtles.
  • Nets kill whales and dolphins.
  • Don't put oil in the sea, fish will eat it and it will kill them.
  • Don't kill all the fish because some of them are too small.
  • Please do not throw rubbish in our waters.
  • Plastic kills turtles because they think plastic bags are jelly fish.
  • Don't fish in marine reserves, the fish are protected.
  • Don't kill sharks, there are not many of them left.
  • Stop throwing plastic and rubbish in the ocean.
  • Pick up your rubbish from the beach.
  • Build big walls to stop tsunami waves taking rubbish out to sea.

We had a fabulous time making them.  Please take some time to enjoy them too.

Being Creative

Please enjoy our oil pastel pictures inspired by the illustrations from the book called 'The Little Fish Who Cried Shark!' by Trish Phillips.

Mathletics

At last we have Mathletics up and running.

As well as using Mathletics in the classroom, I will be setting homework on a fortnightly basis; please log on to Mathletics to see what work has been set.

As well as completing this work, please free to attempt some of the other modules.  This could include: Mathletics modules, Mathletics Live (competing with children of the same level from around the world) and Rainforest Maths .

I would encourage you to attempt things more than once as the more practise you have, the quicker, more confident and accurate you will become.  Please try to win a minimum of 500 points a week.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Have fun and good luck!

Harry Bear

We have a very special bear called Harry who is part of our class.

Every Friday Harry chooses to go home with someone to share their weekend.  All we ask is that you share your experiences in Harry's book and give him lots of love and cuddles.

Our Monarch Butterflies

Over the past couple of weeks we have been watching caterpillars in our classroom eat through lots and lots of leaves!  They started out tiny and have grown and grown and grown!  Our two largest caterpillars went into the pupa stage two weeks ago and have just emerged as beautiful Monarch butterflies.  It was so exciting to watch all of the different stages and we now can't wait for the next caterpillar to be large enough for the magic to happen all over again!

Trip to Kelly Tarlton's

Our Inquiry this term has been: Are our Oceans okay?

Over the past few weeks, we have been learning all about our oceans and seas and what wonderful creatures live there.

As part of our learning experience we spent the day at Kelly Tarlton's, getting to experience these creatures at first hand.  We answered some of our wondering questions, learnt more about how fish breath and swim through the water, watched sting-ray being fed, watched penguins 'fly' through the water and feed their chicks and learnt about what impact our lives has on these delicate habitats.

We all had a wonderful day.  Please have a look at our photographs and see what interesting creatures you can recognise.
