OUR class of Year 1 are all eager to come to school because we have a beautiful spacious room in which to do exciting learning and interesting activities.  Each class takes a turn to conduct the School Assembly in our school hall. When we had our first turn, we felt nervous but very excited, and now we look forward to our next turn! It is fun!

WHAT is a typical day at school for us?

STORY-WRITING time each morning is a very busy time. We always have heaps to write about, and sound out our words to record the letters we hear. We usually draw pictures about our stories first. Sometimes we prefer to illustrate after we have written, especially when we are good at writing and spelling.

WHEN we are working on an inquiry and want to study a particular topic, we collect resources to share. The teacher reads the most important ones to us and we learn lots from studying the pictures and talking about them. We go on interesting trips as well and talk to people who know lots.

READING is a favourite subject with us. We read around our practice boxes for fluency. Every day we read a new reader in school then take it home for the night so that our families can share the story or information with us. They say we can read fabulously!

WE are mobilo-mad! In Maths time we construct huge models when it’s our turn to use it. We love Maths and play neat games to make us quick at adding and subtracting. We practise counting at home so that we can have our names put on the Counting Chart. We recently made a clock each and we learnt to tell the ‘o’clock' and 'half past' times. We learn to recognise shapes and to measure as well.

WE work with a buddy on the computer. We can write stories and print them off to keep or take home, or we can play educational games. One of our favourites is the Magic School bus set – especially Dinosaurs!

WE do neat art work with paints, crayons, pastels, pencils and collage. After it has been on the wall we take it home. We love modelling with playdough. Sometimes we make models of things we are reading about, when it is one of the activities that follow reading. But sometimes we just experiment – at first it is fun squeezing it through our fingers and watching shapes appear.

AFTER all that work, this is what we love to do – play on the adventure playground. We swing, slide, jump, climb and fly!
